Firebirds Fall to North Central in Tarble Arena

KENOSHA - The Carthage women's basketball hosted the North Central College Cardinals on Wednesday evening in Tarble Arena. After a slow start for both teams, the Cardinals offense pulled away early in the third quarter to claim a road win over the Firebirds.



The Cardinals opened the game with a made jumper from Biz Daly and held a brief lead before Elena Knebel drained a three to give the Firebirds an early 3-2 lead. The two squads traded baskets for most of the quarter before the Cardinals went on an 8-2 run to end the quarter with an 18-13 lead. Malia Green led the Firebirds with five points in the quarter.

Marianna Morrissey got the Firebirds offense started in the second quarter with back to back made layups. A layup from Emma Carlson cut the deficit to one point, before free throws from Morrissey gave Carthage a 21-20 lead with 5:49 to play in the first half. The Firebirds held a 26-24 lead in the final minute of the second quarter, but a 4-0 run would send the Cardinals into the break with a 28-26 lead. Morrissey led the Firebirds with six points in the second quarter, while Green led the half with seven points. The two teams combined for 25 turnovers in the first half.

The Cardinals  opened the third quarter with a 13-4 run to jump out to a 41-30 lead with 4:58 to play in the quarter. A three from Alyssa Orozco cut the deficit back to eight points for the Firebirds, but the Cardinals would enter the fourth quarter with a nine point lead at 46-37.

The two teams traded baskets throughout the fourth quarter, with the Cardinals lead fluctuating from eight to 12 points for most of the period. The Firebirds battled back within six points with 1:37 left in the game but were forced to start fouling the Cardinals to stop the clock, leading to a 62-50 victory for the visiting Cardinals.


 
  • Morrissey led the way with 13 points, four rebounds, and four steals.
  • Green finished with 10 points and two steals.
  • Emma Thistle finished with six rebounds and five assists.
