Firebirds Snap Titans Bid for Perfect Season with 87-81 Win in Kenosha

KENOSHA- The Carthage women's basketball team hosted the no. 2/no.3 Illinois Wesleyan Titans at home on Saturday in Tarble Arena. The Titans came into the game as one of the top teams in the country, holding a perfect 20-0 record and outscoring their previous opponents by a total of 330 points on the season. The Firebirds put together one of the best performances by the team all season and came away with Carthage's first win over the Titans in a decade and the program's first win over a ranked opponent since 2021.

How it Happened

1st:
  • The Titans opened the game with a set of free throws that was quickly overturned by back-to-back three-pointers from Malia Green, extending the Firebirds to a 6-2 lead two minutes in. 
  • The two teams traded blows back and forth until jumpers from Marianna Morrissey and Nora Ahram brought the Firebirds ahead by four, leading 14-10. 
  •  Alyssa Orozco continued the scoring run with a three-pointer to extend their lead to 17-12. 
  • Green continued to lead the Firebirds offense with a layup to remain in the lead, ending the first period 19-17. 

2nd: 
  • Both teams fought to gain a lead against one another, with Carthage pulling ahead early into the second period. 
  • A layup from Green gave the Firebirds an eight-point lead with 3:40 left in the half. 
  • Battling against the Titans, the Firebirds held onto their lead, but a Titans three-pointer brought them within two to end the half at 34-32.

3rd: 
  • The two teams traded baskets, holding even on the scoreboard throughout the beginning of the period. 
  • Illinois Wesleyan gained a small advantage after back-to-back three-pointers, flipping the score to 52-47 with 3:46 left in the period. 
  • The Firebirds stayed resilient, getting within two points of the lead with a layup from Elena Knebel at the buzzer. 

4th: 
  • Both teams battled for the lead, keeping the score even early into the final period.
  • A layup from Green fueled the Firebird flame, sparking a 9-4 run going into the game's final minute
  • The Titans attempted a comeback in the final seconds, but the Firebirds kept their advantage, handing Illinois Wesleyan their first loss of the season of 87-81. 

High Flyers
  • Morrissey led the team in points with 27 points on 10 of 21 shooting, along with nine rebounds, and three assists.
  • Green finished with 20 points and two rebounds.
  • Orozco finished with 12 points and a team-high 11 rebounds.
  • Emma Thistle finished with a team-high six assists.
