Firebirds Hold Off Late Surge to Punch Ticket to CCIW Finals

KENOSHA – The Carthage College men's basketball team defeated North Central (Ill.) 84-83 to advance to the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW)  Championship for the first time since 2010. 

The Basics
  • Final Score: No. 1 Carthage 84 - No. 6 North Central (Ill.) 83

How it Happened
  • The visitors struck first with a jumper, but Griffin Daun responded with a layup to even the score. A three-pointer from Riley Brooks gave Carthage an early 7-4 advantage.
  • Playing as the No. 6 seed in the tournament, the opposition regained control, using a 7-0 run to take an 11-7 lead before Daun finished at the rim to cut the deficit.
  • The No. 1 seed Carthage fought back as Colton Sigel buried a three-pointer, and Riley Brooks converted a fastbreak layup to make it a two-point game. 
  • Garrett Arnold connected from deep, bringing the Firebirds within one at 27-26.
  • Despite a strong first half from North Central (Ill.), Ryan Johnson's free throws tied the game at 29. 
  • A layup from Daun put Carthage ahead 35-33, but the opposition responded, knotting the score at 41-41 at halftime.
  • Ryan Johnson opened the second half with a layup, and A.J. Johnson followed with a three-pointer to give Carthage a 46-43 advantage. 
  • Brooks then sank back-to-back triples, stretching the Firebirds' advantage to 54-48.
  • Carthage continued to build momentum as Ryan Johnson's layup made it 68-61 with 9:43 remaining. 
  • The Cardinals clawed back within two before Johnson drained a clutch three to push the lead to 81-78.
  • A late layup trimmed the Firebirds' lead to one, but Ryan Johnson iced the game at the free-throw line, securing an 84-83 victory. 


High Flyers
  • Riley Brooks and Ryan Johnson each tallied 20 points finishing with 21 and 20 respectively. 
  • Johnson registered a double double as he grabbed 14 rebounds. 
  • AJ Williams recorded 14 points and six rebounds while AJ Johnson had nine and five rebounds.
