Men's Basketball Halted by Titans in CCIW Championship

KENOSHA – The No. 1 Carthage College men's basketball team fell to No. 2 Illinois Wesleyan in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Championship 79-60 on Saturday. 

The Basics

How it Happened
  • Illinois Wesleyan opened the game with a layup from Mason Funk, but Griffin Daun quickly responded with a layup of his own. 
  • Riley Brooks drained a three-pointer in transition to bring Carthage within two at 7-5.
  • The Titans built an early lead, going up 15-8 after a 7-0 run. 
  • Ryan Johnson answered with a three-pointer to cut the deficit to four. 
  • Brooks later connected from deep again, making it a 17-13 game.
  • Illinois Wesleyan extended its advantage to 30-18 before A.J. Williams converted a layup to halt the run. 
  • Johnson followed with a fastbreak dunk, bringing Carthage within 10. However, the Titans maintained control, taking a 37-27 lead into halftime.
  • Illinois Wesleyan started the second half strong, building a 53-32 lead before Daun's fastbreak layup trimmed the margin. 
  • Carthage fought back, as Johnson knocked down a three-pointer to make it 69-56 with 4:41 left.
  • The Firebirds continued to battle, with Brooks sinking a pair of free throws to bring them within 75-60, but the deficit proved too much to overcome, as Illinois Wesleyan closed out a 79-60 victory.
