Women's Lacrosse Improves to 3-0 with Win Over Aurora

Carthage 17, Aurora 5
AURORA - The Carthage women's lacrosse team traveled to Illinois for a midweek matchup against the Aurora Spartans on Wednesday afternoon. After a slow start offensively, the Firebirds began to find the back of the net consistently to earn the team's third straight victory to open the season. The Firebirds 3-0 start marks the best start for the program in a single season since 2018.

How it Happened

FIRST QUARTER
  • Rosie Nolan got the Firebirds on the board first with a goal less than 30 seconds into the game (14:33). 
  • The Spartans tied the game at 1-1 with an advantage goal from Brianna Peck (11:35).
  • Kyleigh Higgins (7:36) and August Claridge (6:49) tallied back to back goals to give the Firebirds a 3-1 lead.
  • The Spartans responded with a goal from Kenly Axvig (1:04) to cut the Carthage lead to 3-2.

SECOND QUARTER
  • An Aurora goal from Sydney Breitenstein (8:03) tied the game at 3-3.
  • Bailey Koestel scored an advantage goal (6:46) to put the Firebirds back in the driver's seat with a 4-3 lead. Claridge scored shortly after to extend the lead to two goals at 6:46.
  • The Firebirds tallied three more unanswered goals from Higgins (6:02), Nolan (5:24), and Piper LeFevre (0:36) to give the Firebirds an 8-3 lead to end the first half.

THIRD QUARTER
  • Koestel scored (11:51) to get the Firebirds offense started and extend the lead to 9-3.
  • The Spartans responded with a free position goal from Olivia Dahlberg (11:31) to cut the deficit to five goals.
  • Shannon Heitschmidt (9:48) and Higgins (7:41) tallied back to back goals to bring the lead to 11-4.
  • Breitenstein tallied their second goal of the game to bring the Spartans back within six goals.
  • Nolan registered a goal (6:10) before LeFevre went on a 3-0 run (5:35, 2:59, 1:46) to end the quarter with the Firebirds holding a 15-5 lead.

FOURTH QUARTER
  • Higgins (5:16) and Nolan (2:55) tallied two more goals to bring the final score to 17-5 in favor of Carthage.

High Flyers
  • LeFevre led the Firebirds with four goals on seven shots and two assists.
  • Higgins finished with four goals on six shots and tallied one assist.
  • Nolan scored four goals on six shots.
  • Kara Jaynes earned the win with seven saves.

Coach's Remarks

"Really proud of how the team turned it around," said Head Coach Maddie Berni. "We came out a little slow but started finding the back of the net! Proud of our defense and Kara, for holding it down in net, Rosie really stepped up for us on the draw and on offense. Overall great day to be a bird!"
