No. 5 Carthage Overpowers Concordia Wisconsin in Straight Sets

KENOSHA — The No. 5 ranked Carthage College men's volleyball team opened up the week with a 3-0 straight-set victory over Concordia (Wis.) on Tuesday. 


The Basics
  • Final Score: Carthage 3 - Concordia Wisconsin 0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-13)
  • Location: Kenosha, Wisconsin - Tarble Arena 
  • Records: No. 5 Carthage 8-2, Concordia (Wis.) 2-7
How it Happened
  • Carthage came out strong, taking an early 7-4 lead in the first set with kills from Owen Hendricks and Ben Heise
  • The Firebirds extended their advantage to 20-15 after capitalizing on Concordia's attack errors. 
  • Carthage won the set 25-18 off a Falcons service error.
  • In the second set, an ace from Hendricks put the Firebirds up 3-2. 
  • The home team then pulled away with a 6-0 run, forcing a timeout at 12-7. 
  • A dominant performance at the net from Ryan Cholewinski and Heise stifled the Falcons' attack, and a kill from Sweitzer made it 24-15 as Carthage won the set with a service error.
  • The Firebirds controlled the third set from the start, jumping to an 11-4 lead behind a flurry of kills from Otto and Jack McDonald
  • An ace from Ruben Emmerich pushed the advantage to 21-11 before a final kill from Emmerich sealed the match at 25-13. 


High Flyers
  • Reigning College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Hitter of the Week, Owen Otto tallied 10 kills for the Firebirds followed by Owen Hendricks with eight and Ryan Cholewinski with seven. 
  • Cholewinski led the team in total blocks with three while Ryan Morey had 31 assists.
