Fifth Ranked Firebirds Sweep Eagles in Three

KENOSHA — The No. 5 ranked Carthage College men's volleyball team faced off against the Benedictine (Ill.) Eagles won in straight sets 3-0. 

The Basics
  • Final Score: Carthage College 0 - Benedictine (Ill.) 0 (25-21, 25-15, 25-20) 
  • Location: Kenosha, Wisconsin - Tarble Arena 
  • Records: No. 5 Carthage 9-2, Benedictine (Ill.) 6-6
How it Happened
  • Benedictine held a lead of two for the beginning of the first set before a kill from Ryan Cholewinski got Carthage within one. 
  • The visitors went up by two, however, a 7-2 run flipped the score to 17-14 with a kill from Owen Hendricks
  • Both teams traded points until the Eagles managed a one-point lead, that was quickly overturned at 20 by an Owen Otto kill. 
  • Carthage remained valiant in their conquest taking the set 25-21 with points from Otto and Devon O'Callaghan
  • The Eagles came in strong with a 3-0 run at the beginning of set two. 
  • An attack error sparked a 4-0 run for the Firebirds, with kills from Hudson Sweitzer, Jack McDonald, and Otto, leading 8-4. 
  • A kill from Ben Heise continued their advantage and gave Carthage a six-point margin. 
  • The Firebirds extended their lead further with a 5-0 run heightening their advantage 21-12. 
  • Carthage held onto their lead to end the set 25-15 
  • Carthage and Benedictine traded blows to start the third, holding each other within two. 
  • A kill from Cholewinski tied the score 16 sparking a 5-1 run with points from Joe Kolwicz, McDonald, and two attack errors to lead 21-17. 
  • Back-to-back kills from Ruben Emmerich, and Otto assisted their lead to take the final set 25-20. 

High Flyers
  • Owen Otto led the Firebirds in kills with 13, followed by Ben Heise and Jack McDonald with eight 
  • Ryan Morey led the team in assists with 36. 
  • Carthage hit .519 in set two with 17 kills, three errors, and 27 total attacks.
