Carthage Drops Home Battle to Augustana (Ill.)

KENOSHA — The Carthage College football team dropped a 23-3 decision to Augustana (Ill.) on Saturday afternoon at Art Keller Field in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) play.

The Basics

How it Happened
  • Augustana struck first midway through the opening quarter, capping a 10-play, 72-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown pass. The Firebirds responded late in the quarter when Mugdim Kreho converted a 28-yard field goal to trim the deficit to 7-3.
  • In the second quarter, the Vikings extended their advantage with a 16-yard touchdown strike with 3:43 left before halftime. A 40-yard field goal in the closing minute gave Augustana a 17-3 lead at the break.
  • Carthage had a chance to close the gap in the third quarter but came up empty on a fourth-down attempt deep in Viking territory. Augustana capitalized, adding a 34-yard field goal to go up 20-3 and a 38-yarder early in the fourth to push the margin to 23-3, sealing the victory.


High Flyers
  • Quarterback Easton Heafner finished 16-for-31 passing for 171 yards, connecting with eight different receivers. Gavin Betts led the receiving corps with 46 yards on three catches, while Mark Hunter added 59 total yards (41 receiving, 18 rushing). Bryce Frank rushed for 40 yards on eight carries, including a 22-yard run in the first half.
  • Defensively, Briton Stanton posted a team-high 13 tackles with one sack and two tackles for loss. Ramon Campos added nine tackles and a pass breakup, while Jeremy Rowlett and Idarius Walton each tallied five stops.
  • The Firebirds were held to 197 yards of total offense but forced Augustana to punt four times and limited the Vikings to 4-for-12 on third-down conversions.
