Firebirds Take Back Old Musket With Home Victory

KENOSHA — The Carthage College football team closed its season with a 7-3 victory over Carroll (Wis.) on Saturday afternoon at Art Keller Field in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play to reclaim the Old Musket.

The Basics
  • Final Score: Carthage 7 – Carroll (Wis.) 3
  • Location: Kenosha, Wisconsin – Art Keller Field
  • Records: Carthage 4-6 (3-6 CCIW), Carroll (Wis.) 4-6 (4-5 CCIW)
How it Happened
  • Carthage broke through early in the second quarter, finishing an 18-play, 84-yard drive that drained more than ten minutes off the clock. Easton Heafner connected with Jackson Westmoreland for a six-yard touchdown with 12:06 remaining before halftime, and Mugdim Kreho added the extra point to make it 7-0.
  • The Firebird defense controlled the rest of the half, forcing three Carroll punts and limiting the Pioneers to minimal gains on the ground. Key stops from Briton Stanton, Koen Abreu, and Ramon Campos helped send Carthage into the break with its seven-point advantage intact.
  • Carthage opened the second half with strong field position but could not extend the lead. Midway through the third quarter, the Firebirds recovered a Carroll fumble at the Pioneers' 27, but a 41-yard field-goal attempt went wide.
  • Carroll cut the margin to 7-3 early in the fourth quarter, converting a 13-play, 81-yard drive into a 29-yard field goal with twelve minutes and thirty-three seconds remaining.
  • The Firebirds responded by leaning on their defense the rest of the way, forcing two punts and a turnover on downs in the final minutes to seal the win.

High Flyers
  • Heafner finished thirteen-for-nineteen for 86 yards and one touchdown, finding Westmoreland six times for 55 yards.
  • Mark Hunter paced the ground game with 85 rushing yards on 16 carries, highlighted by a thirty-one-yard run in the second quarter. Bryce Frank added 37 rushing yards on nine attempts.
  • Carthage's defense delivered one of its strongest efforts of the season, holding Carroll out of the end zone and generating timely takeaways.
  • Mariano Talamantez set the tone with a first-quarter interception returned 13 yards, while Jeremy Rowlett recovered a fumble in the third.
  • Campos led the team with seven tackles, and the Firebirds recorded four tackles for loss and three quarterback hurries.
  • Punter Matt Grzyb consistently flipped the field, placing five of his six punts inside the 20-yard line.
  • Carthage finished with 169 yards of offense and controlled possession for more than 34 minutes, while holding Carroll to 3-13 on third-down attempts.
