Firebirds Fall in Straight Sets in the Windy City

UChicago 3, Carthage 0 (27-25, 25-22, 25-13)
CHICAGO, Ill. – The Carthage women's volleyball team came up short on the road Tuesday night, falling in straight sets to the University of Chicago inside the Ratner Athletics Center.

The Firebirds opened strong in the first set, trading points with the Maroons through 12 ties. Kristina Manojlovic and Hailey Wierzgac powered the attack early, while setter Ava Dettwiler guided a balanced offense that held the Maroons to just .160 hitting. Despite leading 24-23 late, Carthage couldn't hold off a UChicago rally, falling 27-25.

Carthage continued to battle in the second, with Manojlovic adding several key kills and Cassidy Stahl anchoring the back row defensively. The Firebirds stayed within striking distance throughout but were edged 25-22 in another tightly contested frame. The Maroons carried that momentum into the third, hitting .300 as a team to close out the match with a 25-13 decision.

"Got off to a good start in set one but weren't able to seal the deal," said Head Coach Leanne Ulmer. "Dug a bit of a hole in set 2. We got some momentum but they held us off. The offense struggled to get anything going in set 3. We have a big CCIW match on Saturday.  We need a good run of practices to get our offense on track!"

The Firebirds (17-11, 2-3 CCIW) returns to Tarble Arena on Saturday, Nov. 1 as the Firebirds will celebrate Senior Night against North Park at 6 p.m. For more information, visit athletics.carthage.edu.
