Carlson Leads Firebirds to Win Over Vikings

KENOSHA - The Carthage women's basketball returned to Tarble Arena on Saturday afternoon to host the Augustana Vikings in the first game of the back half of the CCIW schedule. The Firebirds battled hard for 40 minutes and came away with a victory, sweeping the Vikings in the regular season. 



The Vikings found the scoreboard first, taking a 2-0 lead to start the game. Emma Carlson got the Firebirds on the scoreboard with a jump shot with 8:29 to play in the first quarter. The Vikings went on a 4-0 run before a basket and two free throws from Malia Green tied the game at 6-6. A made jumper from Marianna Morrissey gave the Firebirds the lead for the first time in the game and a score from Grace Cord boosted the Firebirds out to a 10-6 lead with 4:16 on the clock. A basket from the Vikings cut into the lead before a three pointer from Nora Ahram extended the lead to five points. The Firebirds ended the quarter with a 15-13 lead after a late three pointer from the Vikings. Carlson and Green led the way with each scoring four points in the period. 

The Vikings tied the game at 15-15 to start the second quarter and used a 7-0 run to take a 20-15 lead with 5:58 left in the first half. Morrissey scored on three straight free throws and a three from Ahram swung the lead back in favor of the Firebirds. The two sides traded baskets for the remainder of the quarter and the Firebirds held a 31-26 lead at the end of the half. Morrissey and Ahram each finished with five points in the quarter and Ahram led the team in scoring with eight points at the half.

The Vikings scored to open the second half and cut the lead to three points for Carthage. A three from Elena Knebel and a free throw from Morrissey extended the Carthage lead to seven points. A jumper and a pair of free throws from Carlson and another three for Ahram extended the Firebirds offensive run, building the lead to 42-28 with 2:59 left in the third. At the end of the period, the Firebirds held a 43-34 lead. Carlson led the way with four points in the quarter.

The final period began with a three for the Vikings before Knebel responded with a three for the Firebirds. The Firebirds built their lead to 11 points with a pair of layups from Carlson. The Vikings then used an 11-4 run to cut the lead to 54-50 with 3:32 remaining. The Vikings began to foul in order to stop the clock and the Firebirds were electric from the free throw line, going 7-10 from the free throw line in the final three minutes of the game and the Firebirds came away with a 61-52. 


 
  • Carlson led the way with 16 points, nine rebounds, and two assists.
  • Ahram finished with 11 points, two rebounds, and two steals.







The Firebirds (14-4, 6-3 CCIW) returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 29 at 7 p.m. as the team faces off against Carroll in Waukesha, Wis.
