Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Cold Start Downs Firebirds in Waukesha

Carroll 80, Carthage 53
WAUKESHA - The Carthage women's basketball traveled north on Wednesday evening to take on the Carroll University Pioneers in a CCIW contest. It was a tough night for the Firebirds, as a cold start led to a big deficit early in the game and led to a loss at the hands of the hosting Pioneers.

The Pioneers opened up the ball game with a 14-2 run to jump out to a big lead. A three from Alyssa Orozco cut the deficit to nine points for the Firebirds and a pair of free throws from Emma Carlson cut the Pioneers lead to 14-7. A layup from Carlson cut the lead to five with three minutes to go, but a three from Carroll's Emilie Wizner brought the lead to 17-9 with 2:21 left in the quarter. The two squads traded baskets back and forth to end the period, with Carroll leading 25-13 at the end of the quarter. Orozco led the team with five points in the quarter.

The Pioneers scored the first points of the second quarter with a jumper from Olivia Rangel. Marianna Morrissey answered with a layup to bring the score to 27-15 in favor of the Pioneers. A layup from Malia Green brought the deficit to ten from a moment but the Pioneers responded on the next possession. Despite strong scoring efforts, the Firebirds could not get the defensive stop needed to cut the deficit to single digits. The Pioneers took a 43-30 lead into the halftime break. Morrissey led the second quarter scoring with four points and had the most points in the half for the Firebirds with six.

Morrissey got the scoring started in the third quarter with a layup that was assisted by Emma Thistle. A layup from Carlson cut the lead to nine. With just over four minutes left in the quarter, Carroll held a ten point lead before Morrissey drained a three to bring the score to 47-40. The Pioneers went on a small run to end the quarter with a 60–49 lead. Morrissey led the Firebirds with nine points in the quarter.

The Pioneers extended their lead to 13 to open the quarter and proceeded to outscore the Firebirds 20-4 in the period to claim an 80-53 victory.

  • Morrissey led the team with 15 points.
  • Orozco finished with 11 points, six rebounds, and three assists.

"We just got outworked tonight," said Head Coach Megan Jones. "Credit to Carroll, they were the aggressors all night. We had it at seven [points] and couldn't string together stops to get it any closer. Our effort and energy was inconsistent and it showed in our performance. We have to learn from it and move on to start off February strong."

The Firebirds (14-5, 6-4 CCIW) returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 1 as the team travels to Chicago, Ill. to take on North Park at 2 p.m. Carthage women's basketball returns to Tarble Arena on Feb. 8 as the Firebirds host no. 2 Illinois Wesleyan at 2 p.m. For more information, visit athletics.carthage.edu.
