Firebirds Hold Off Augustana for Gritty 77-69 Victory

KENOSHA - The Carthage College men's basketball team earned a hard-fought victory over Augustana (Ill.) 77-69.

How it Happened
  • Ryan Johnson put Carthage out in front with a pair of free throws, giving the Firebirds an early seven-point lead.  
  • A three-pointer from Colton Sigel and a layup by Johnson extended Carthage's lead to 18-8.  
  • With 7:36 remaining in the first half, Riley Brooks sank a jumper to push the Firebirds ahead 29-17.  
  • Brooks added another basket to maintain Carthage's double-digit lead at 38-24, helping the team take a 41-30 advantage into halftime.  
  • In the second half, Griffin Daun's layup stretched the Firebirds' lead to 51-41.  
  • Augustana (Ill.) rallied, closing the gap to two points with a pair of free throws before tying the game at 64.  
  • The Vikings pulled within one point late in the game, but a clutch free throw from Johnson made it 69-67 with 1:34 left on the clock.  
  • Carthage sealed the victory by converting eight free throws in the final moments to secure a 77-69 win.


High Flyers
  • AJ Johnson led the Firebirds with 29 points, connecting on 10-of-11 attempts from the free throw line. 
  • Riley Brooks contributed 16 points and five rebounds, while Ryan Johnson notched a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds.
  • AJ Williams added 12 points, and Griffin Daun led the team with five assists.
