Men's Soccer Shuts Out Millikin at Art Keller Field

Carthage 2, Millikin 0
KENOSHA - The Carthage men's soccer opened conference play against the Millikin Big Blue at Art Keller Field on Saturday evening. It was a strong night for the Firebirds, who came away the shutout victory to start the CCIW schedule with a win.

How it Happened

Carthage wasted no time getting the offense started, as Jethro Yumange scored a goal in the eighth minute to give the Firebirds a 1-0 lead. Aidan Crowder was credited with the assist on the scoring play. In the 36th minute, Yumange found Mickey Reilly open for the insurance goal to extend the lead to 2-0.

Both teams went scoreless in the second half. The Firebirds defense stood strong, preventing 12 shot attempts from getting the Big Blue on the scoreboard. Evan Kowalski made four saves in the half.

Coach's Remarks

"We knew the first CCIW game of the season was always going to be a tough battle and it proved to be the case," said Head Coach Paul Leese. "We didn't play our best tonight but showed maturity to control the game during the right moments and come out with the win. We had some young guys out there tonight getting their first taste of conference action and they performed well. It's important that we continue to grow and keep working hard for each other as we enter a long and hard conference run."

High Flyers

  • Reilly scored his fifth goal of the season and the 45th goal of his career. He is now tied for the most goals scored in a career in Carthage history.
  • Yumange scored his third goal of the 2024 season and the eighth of his career.
  • Kowalski made seven saves in the game, bringing his season total to 39.
