Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Firebirds Come Up Short in Final Minutes at Carroll

Carroll 2, Carthage 1
WAUKESHA - The Carthage men's soccer hit the road on Wednesday evening to take on the Carroll Pioneers. The match was a defensive battle for the majority of the 90 minutes, but a batch of goals in the final five minutes would decide the fate of the two squads. The Firebirds would ultimately fall to the Pioneers 2-1.

How it Happened

Momentum swung both ways in the opening 45 minutes, with Carroll taking the advantage in shots 6-5 in the first half. The Firebirds were able to get three shots on goal in the period, while the Pioneers were able to put one shot on goal.

Possession of the ball stayed with the Pioneers for most of the second half, with Carroll taking 12 shots to the Carthage four. The Firebirds defense held strong for most of the half, keeping the game at a scoreless tie. In the 86th minute, the Pioneers finally broke through with a goal from Marti Solanelles to give Carroll a 1-0 lead. The Firebirds responded immediately with Samuel Riano sending the ball up to Jethro Yumange who found Josh Barry for the equalizing goal just 1:17 after the Carroll goal. Carroll scored the game winning goal in the 90th minute with another goal from Solanelles.

Coach's Remarks

"The performance tonight was far below the standard we have set for ourselves," said Head Coach Paul Leese. "Carroll played very well and deserved their win. We need to pick ourselves up and make sure we are ready for Saturday and another CCIW battle."

High Flyers

  • Barry scored his first goal of the season.
  • Yumange earned his fourth assist of the season; Riano earned his first assist of the year.
  • Evan Kowalski made eight saves in the game, bringing his season total to 47 saves
