Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Takes Down No. 21 UChicago

Carthage 1, No. 21 UChicago 0
KENOSHA - The Carthage men's soccer hosted the UChicago Maroons at Art Keller Field on Wednesday evening. The Firebirds offense struck early, while the defense stood strong to give the Firebirds their first win over the Maroons since 2018.

How it Happened

The Firebirds jumped on the scoreboard in the 25th minute when Aidan Crowder scored the game-winning goal off an assist from Nick Renfro. Though UChicago registered seven shots, goalkeeper Evan Kowalski recorded two saves in the opening 45 minutes of play.

The Firebirds were dominant defensively in the second half. The Maroons took nine shots in the period with three being on goal. Kowalski earned two more saves and the Firebirds defense registered a team save as well. Despite heavy pressure from the UChicago offense in the final 15 minutes, the Firebirds came away with the victory over their ranked opponent.

Coach's Remarks

"First of all it was an incredible game of soccer tonight - possibly the best I have witnessed yet on Art Keller Field" said Head Coach Paul Leese. "We passed the ball well and scored a tremendous goal. Chicago are an incredibly strong team and we had to dig deep and work extremely hard to hold onto the victory during the last 15 minutes of the game. The boys showed great character and I am very proud of them and pleased for them - they deserved it tonight."

High Flyers

  • Crowder registered his team-leading fifth goal of the season and the 35th goal of his career.
  • Kowalski earned four saves.
  • Renfro was credited with his first assist of the season and the ninth of his career.
