Firebirds Suffer Defeat with Late Pirates Goal

Southwestern 3, Carthage 2
KENOSHA - The Carthage men's soccer hosted the Southwestern (Tex.) Pirates on Saturday evening at Art Keller Field. After a slow offensive start, the two teams traded goals throughout the second half until the Pirates came away with the victory after 90 minutes of play.

How it Happened

The Pirates opened the scoring in the 25th minute with a goal from Keegan Hardy to give Southwestern a 1-0 lead at the half. The Firebirds out-shot the Pirates 8-2 in the opening half, with three shots being on goal for the home squad.

The Firebirds leveled the score at 1-1 in the 59th minute with an unassisted goal from Mickey Reilly. Five minutes later, Jordan Mok found Dennis Valle on a cross kick and Valle used a header to give the Firebirds a 2-1 lead in the 64th minute. The lead did not last long, as the Pirates used a goal in the 66th minute to tie the game and another goal in the 82nd minute to secure the win over the Firebirds.

Coach's Remarks

"A very hard one to take tonight," said Head Coach Paul Leese. "We controlled the game, dominated the ball in both halves and scored two great goals. Unfortunately we also committed three mental errors and it cost us the victory we deserved. The result was tough on the boys for the tremendous work they put in and the quality of their play. It was a hard lesson but one which will help us grow and come back stronger."

High Flyers

  • Reilly scored his fourth goal of the season and the 44th goal of his career. He is now tied with Michael Dombrowski for second on the Carthage all-time scoring list.
  • Valle scored his first goal of the season and his second career goal.
  • Mok earned his team-leading fourth assist of the season.
