Firebirds Open CCIW Play with Straight-Set Victory Over Pioneers

KENOSHA — To begin the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) action, the Carthage College women's volleyball team shut out Carroll (Wis.) 3-0 on Wednesday night. 

The Basics
  • Final score: Carthage 3 - Carroll (Wis.) 0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-18)

  • Records: Carthage 6-2 (1-0 CCIW), Carroll (Wis.) 13-3 (0-1 CCIW)
How it Happened
  • After Carroll (Wis.) opened the first set with a 10-5 lead, Carthage responded with a 7-1 run, highlighted by three consecutive aces from Kristina Manojlovic, taking the lead at 12-11.
  • The teams traded points until the set was tied at 20 following a kill from Manojlovic.
  • Despite a late push from Carroll (Wis.), Carthage closed out the set 25-23 with two kills from Liv Carel and Kaitie Rohe and an ace from Jenna Damon.
  • The visitors held a 14-10 lead in the second set before a 10-2 Carthage run, fueled by kills from Rohe, Katie Boston, and Carel, pushed the Firebirds ahead 20-16.
  • Carroll (Wis.) briefly regained the lead at 23-22, but kills from Carel and Rohe, along with a Pioneers attack error, secured the set for Carthage at 25-23.
  • Two consecutive kills from Manojlovic in the third set gave Carthage a six-point lead.
  • A later five-point streak brought Carthage to set point, and a final kill from Carel clinched the 25-18 victory.

High Flyers
  • Kaitie Rohe led the match with 13 kills, while Liv Carel was close behind with 12. This marked Rohe's third match of the season with double-digit kills and Carel's fourth.  
  • Jenna Damon and Kristina Manojlovic topped the team in aces with three each.  
  • The pair also led in digs, with Damon recording 36 and Manojlovic adding 13.  
  • Damon tied the school record for most digs in a three set match. 
  • Devinn Bell contributed 23 assists, and Tatum Kebisek chipped in with 15.

Team Results
  • Carthage travels to Wisconsin-Stevens Point this weekend for the Pointers Invitational. The Firebirds will face Concordia (Minn.) and Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Friday, September 20, at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.  
  • On Saturday, September 21, Carthage will take on Wisconsin-River Falls at 10 a.m.
