Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Opens Season with 1-0 Win Over Dominican

RIVER FOREST - The Carthage men's soccer team opened the 2024 season on the road against the Dominican Stars on Friday evening. It was a tight defensive battle the entire match, as the Firebirds used a late goal to earn the win in the season debut.

How it Happened

The Stars held the momentum in the opening half, registering six shots to the Firebirds three. Despite three shots being on goal for the Stars, the two squads went into halftime still locked in a scoreless tie.

The Firebirds came into the second half with new energy, out-shooting the Stars five to one in the opening 15 minutes of the half. Despite the offensive surge, the two teams remained scoreless heading into the final minutes of the match. In the 83rd minute, Jordan Mok and Jethro Yumange connected with Aidan Crowder for the winning goal, giving Carthage a 1-0 lead. The Firebirds defense shut down the Stars in the remaining time and secured the first win of the season for the Firebirds.

Coach's Remarks

"It was a hard fought win against a strong Dominican team," said Head Coach Paul Leese. "Our new group has come together well during preseason and they worked and supported each other for the entire 90 minutes. Last season we would not have been in a position to win the game late as we did today. There is a maturity and togetherness in the team that impresses me and I'm excited to see them grow during the season. "

High Flyers

  • Crowder scored his first goal of the season and now has 31 career goals
  • Yumange and Mok each earned their first assist of the season
  • Evan Kowalski earned the shutout win in goal with four saves in his first appearance of the year
  • Leese earned his 20th career win as Head Coach of the Firebirds
