Second Half Offense Lifts Firebirds Over Cougars

Carthage 3, Concordia Chicago 1
RIVER FOREST - The Carthage men's soccer team wrapped up the Labor Day weekend road trip with a Sunday afternoon match against the Concordia Chicago Cougars. After a slow start offensively, the Firebirds rallied in the second half to earn their second consecutive win to open the 2024 season.

How it Happened
The two sides kept the score level for the majority of the first half, with a combined eight shots being taken in the opening 30 minutes. The Cougars broke the scoreless tie in the 40th minute with a right-footed goal from Michael Senese to give Concordia Chicago a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

The Firebirds offense came alive in the second half, with Mickey Reilly receiving a pass from Jordan Mok and leveling the score at 1-1 with a goal off his right foot in the 52nd minute. The Firebirds then took the lead in the 65th minute as Reilly moved the ball to Elias Fernandez, which led to an open pass to Aidan Crowder, who found the top left area of the net for his second goal of the young season. Crowder wasted no time adding to his totals, scoring another right-footed goal in the 67th minute off a deflected shot by Reilly to extend the Firebirds lead to 3-1. The Firebirds defense kept the Cougars neutralized for the remaining 23 minutes, as Carthage walked away with the second road win of the year.

Coach's Remarks

"We took a little while to find our rhythm today," said Head Coach Paul Leese, "but that can happen early in the season. We kept working and kept doing the right things, which paid dividends in the second half. We remained calm and showed our quality, which allowed us to control the second half and score three well-deserved goals. A big positive was also seeing many young players step up and show that they belong at this level."

High Flyers

  • Crowder scored his third goal of the season and now has 33 career goals.
  • Reilly scored his first goal of the season, bringing his career total to 41 goals.
  • Fernandez earned his first assist of the season.
  • Evan Kowalski made his second appearance in goal this season, earning five saves.
