Schaum Sets Career Strikeout Record as Firebirds Defeat Illinois Wesleyan in CCIW Tournament

CHICAGO - Making their 29th program appearance in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Tournament, the No. 6 seed Carthage College baseball team defeated the No. 3 seed Illinois Wesleyan 7-4.

How it Happened 
  • On the second pitch of the game, Kody Krekling hit a homer to right-center for a 1-0 lead. 
  • After Illinois Wesleyan tied the game at two, two runs came across the plate for Carthage in the sixth. 
  • The Firebirds drove in two in the sixth as an RBI single from Evan Devine scored Matt Felber
  • An error from the Titans shortstop scored another run for Carthage. 
  • In the seventh, a bases-loaded walk allowed Zander Tubbs to cross home plate. 
  • Another walk and a hit by pitch scored Joe Zuleger and P.J. Moser
  • Illinois Wesleyan got two back making it a three-run game but Jake Pappagallo got a strikeout, groundout, and a flyout to win 7-4.  

High Flyers
  • With 10 strikeouts in the contest, Bryce Schaum became the new career leader in program history, driving his career total to 237. Schaum has 113 strikeouts this season, the second-best single-season record for Carthage. 
  • Drew Knecht and Evan Devine led the Firebirds in the batter's box with four and three hits, respectively. 
  • Zander Tubbs, Joe Zuleger, and Matt Felber all had two hits in the game.
