Carthage Baseball Tournament Journey Concludes in Chicago

CHICAGO - After rain delayed the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Tournament on Thursday, the Carthage College baseball team fell to North Park in the opening game 4-1, then in the nightcap fell to Augustana (Ill.) 8-3, ending their run in the tournament.

Game One 
  • Final score: North Park 4 - Carthage 1

How it Happened 
  • Game one started with North Park, the top-seeded team in the tournament, securing a lone run in the first and three runs in the third.
  • Carthage managed to get on the scoreboard with a solo home run to left-center field by Max Cairo, reducing the deficit to three runs.
  • Although singles from Kody Krekling and Cairo in the sixth inning, Carthage's offensive effort was thwarted by a subsequent flyout.
  • North Park maintained their advantage, ultimately clinching the game with a final score of 4-1.
 
  • In the second game of the day, Augustana (Illinois), seeded fifth, took an early lead with two runs in the first inning before Carthage responded with an RBI single from Joe Zuleger.
  • A bunt single in the fifth inning extended Augustana's lead to 3-1, but Carthage quickly countered with an RBI double to left-center field by Zander Tubbs, bringing Krekling home.
  • AJ Gaca's single then drove in Tubbs, tying the game at three runs apiece.
  • Augustana surged ahead with three runs in the sixth inning and added two more in the ninth, winning 8-3.


High Flyers
  • Max Cairo hit his sixth homer of the season against North Park. 
  • Kody Krekling, Tubbs, and P.J. Moser all had doubles in the game, with Tubbs hitting two against Augustana (Ill.).
  • On the mound during game two, Jake Pappagallo struck out five over 5.1 innings of work.
