Firebirds Swept in Rock Island

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - The Carthage College baseball team fell to Augustana (Ill.) 5-4 and 4-2 in Saturday's action. 

The Basics
Game One 
  • Final score: Augustana (Ill.) 5 - Carthage 4
  • Location: Rock Island, Illinois  - Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field
  • Records: Augustana (Ill.) 23-15 (9-10 CCIW), Carthage 22-15 (9-10 CCIW)

How it Happened 
  • Carthage secured an early lead in game one when P.J. Moser drove in a run with a single.
  • In the fourth inning, Drew Knecht's deep fly out to center field allowed Joe Zuleger to score.
  • A sacrifice fly by Kody Krekling extended Carthage's lead to 3-0 as AJ Gaca crossed home plate.
  • Gaca's RBI single to left field in the seventh inning increased the lead to 4-0.
  • Despite Carthage's efforts, the Vikings scored one run in the eighth inning and three in the ninth, tying the game at four.
  • In the bottom of the 10th inning, Augustana (Illinois) secured victory with an RBI single.
 
  • Augustana (Ill.) seized control early in game two, taking a 2-0 lead in the opening inning.
  • Carthage fought back, with a groundout by Gaca and an RBI single from Mike Ciesla knotting the score at two.
  • However, the Vikings scored single runs in the fifth and eighth innings, ultimately prevailing with a 4-2 victory.


High Flyers
  • P.J. Moser and AJ Gaca totaled two hits for the Firebirds with Moser hitting a double in game one.  
  • Kody Krekling stole one base during game one.
  • Zander Tubbs, Krekling, Moser, and Joe Zuleger all hit doubles in game two. 
  • Ryan Scanlon fanned four batters over four innings of work during game one while Brendan Robers struck out two during the second game. 
 
Up Next 
  • The Firebirds are back on the diamond tomorrow as the team travels to Lakeland for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
