Women's Lacrosse Defeats Illinois Wesleyan; Advances to CCIW Championship Game

KENOSHA, Wis. - The Carthage women's lacrosse team hosted the Illinois Wesleyan Titans in the opening round of the CCIW Women's Lacrosse Tournament at Art Keller Field on Wednesday evening. It was a tight battle through three quarters, but a dominant fourth quarter would lift the Firebirds to victory over the Titans and advance Carthage into the CCIW Championship game. The night was also highlighted by a pair of school records, as August Claridge broke the single season record for goals scored and Alessandra Almendarez broke the Carthage record for career games played.

How it Happened

Quarter 1
  • The Titans were the first to find the back of the net, but Carthage quickly struck back with an unassisted goal by Shannon Heitschmidt.
  • The visitors gained an advantage after back to back goals, but the Firebirds settled the score with goals from Claridge and Heitschmidt. 
  • After a goal from Illinois Wesleyan, Heitscmidt retaliated by scoring an unassisted goal for an opening quarter hat trick. 
  • Bailey Koestel scored her first goal of the contest soon after, giving Carthage their first lead of the competition at 5-4. 

Quarter 2
  • The Titans struck first in the beginning of the second quarter, but Heitschmidt restored Carthage's lead by scoring her fourth goal of the contest. 
  • Soon after Illinois Wesleyan scored two consecutive goals to gain the lead, Kyleigh Higgins scored a goal, making the score 7-7 going into halftime. 

Quarter 3 
  • Carthage was first to find the back of the net at the beginning of the second half with a goal from Heitschmidt. 
  • The visitors fought back with a goal to tie the score once again. Heitschmidt scored her sixth goal of the contest in order to regain Carthage's lead, earning a personal season high. 
  • Shortly after, the Titans settled the score with a goal. However, Carthage's lead returned after goals were scored by Koestel and Heitschmidt. 
  • The Titans lessened the deficit with a goal, but Higgins scored her second goal of the contest to further Carthage's advantage. The visitors scored a goal near the end of the quarter, making the score 12-11 going into the final quarter. 

Quarter 4 
  • Claridge furthered Carthage's lead in the fourth quarter with three back to back goals, giving her the second hat trick alongside Heitschmidt. 
  • Heitschmidt extended the Firebirds' advantage to 16-11 by scoring her eighth goal of the competition. Carthage came out victorious and advanced to the CCIW Finals. 

High Flyers
 
  • Heitschmidt led the Firebirds with 8 goals and an assist.
  • Claridge scored 4 goals and had 7 ground balls.
  • Higgins had 2 goals, 2 assists, and 10 draw controls.
  • Almendarez made 7 saves in the victory.
