Women's Lacrosse Opens CCIW Play with Win Over Elmhurst

KENOSHA, Wis. - The Carthage women's lacrosse team hosted the Elmhurst Bluejays at Art Keller Field on Saturday afternoon. It was an offensive showcase for the Firebirds who came away for a blowout victory in the CCIW opener.

How it Happened

Quarter 1
  • The Firebirds found the back of the net early into the contest with a goal from August Claridge, assisted by Hannah Kim. 
  • Carthage continued the run with five goals: two from Shannon Heitschmidt, two from Kyleigh Higgins, and one from Claridge. 
  • Heitschmidt earned a hat trick after an assist from Higgins, and scored her fourth goal of the contest shortly after.
  • The Firebirds continued their run when Claridge followed suit and earned a hat trick after an unassisted goal. Soon after, Claridge scored her fourth goal of the game, making the score 10-0 at the end of the first quarter. 

Quarter 2
  • Carthage extended their lead with a goal from Heitschmidt, assisted by Claridge. This was her fifth goal of the contest and marks a season high.
  • Shortly after, Rosie Nolan and Kim scored their first goals of the game to end the half with a score of 13-0. 

Quarter 3
  • To start the second half, the Firebirds continued their run with back to back goals from Claridge.
  • Carthage extended their lead to 16-0 after Bailey Koestel scored her first goal of the game.
  • Higgins earned the third hat trick for the Firebirds to end the third quarter. 

Quarter 4
  • Two minutes into the final quarter, Emma McDonald scored her first goal of the contest, assisted by Higgins. 
  • The Firebirds continued extending the advantage with a goal from Kim, her second of the game.
  • The Bluejays ended the 19-0 run with a goal late in the fourth quarter, but Carthage quickly retaliated with an unassisted goal from Koestel and Carthage came out victorious at a score of 20-1. 

High Flyers
 
  • Claridge led the Firebirds with six goals, and an assist
  • Heitschmidt scored five goals on six shots
  • Higgins finished with three goals and three assists
