Firebirds Defeat Titans in Midweek Road Game

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Carthage women's lacrosse team hit the road on Wednesday to take on the Illinois Wesleyan Titans. After a closely contested first half, the Firebirds offense took flight and came away with a convincing road win to remain undefeated in conference play.

How it Happened

Quarter 1:
  • The Titans jumped on the board first, scoring a goal just over a minute into the game.
  • The Firebirds offense responded with four straight goals, with three coming from August Claridge and one coming from Bailey Koestel. All four goals were unassisted.
  • The Titans found the back of the net once more before the end of the quarter, cutting the Firebirds lead to 4-2.

Quarter 2:
  • Illinois Wesleyan scored again with 10:26 left in the half to make it a one-goal game.
  • Kyleigh Higgins ended the Titans offensive run with an unassisted goal, extending the lead to 5-3, before another Titan goal cut the score to 5-4.
  • Higgins and Claridge scored back to back unanswered goals within 40 seconds of each other to build the Firebird lead back up to three goals, as the Firebirds went into the half leading 7-4.

Quarter 3: 
  • The Titans lone goal of the second half came just a minute into the third quarter.
  • The Firebirds went on a 4-0 run for the remainder of the quarter, with goals coming from Shannon Heitschmidt, Higgins, and two from Claridge.

Quarter 4: 
  • The Firebirds offensive surge continued with two more goals from Claridge, as well as goals from Heitschmidt, Higgins, and Rosie Nolan.

High Flyers
 
  • Claridge led the Firebirds with eight goals and an assist.
  • Higgins scored four goals and had two assists, along with three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
  • Heitschmidt scored two goals on six shot attempts.
  • Alessandra Almendarez earned eight saves in goal and earned the win.

Coach's Remarks

"Really great team effort today," said Head Coach Rebecca Congel. "All over the field, the team fought through contact and valued our possessions against a strong IWU team to give us our second conference win. Looking forward getting back to work tomorrow and heading down to Augustana on Saturday."
