Carthage Baseball Splits at Wheaton

WHEATON, Ill.  — The Carthage College baseball team split Saturday's competition in Wheaton, falling 2-1 and then picking up the victory in game two 3-1. 

The Basics
Game One
  • Final score: Wheaton (Ill.) 2 - Carthage 1

How it Happened 
 
  • In the opening game, Carthage took an early lead when Kody Krekling smashed a homer in the second at-bat of the first. 
  • The Firebirds maintained their advantage until the seventh inning when a crucial RBI single equalized the score at one apiece. 
  • Wheaton (Illinois) secured the victory with a walk-off RBI single, concluding the first game with a score of 2-1.
 
  • Carthage once again seized the initiative in the second game, with Zander Tubbs delivering an RBI single that brought Krekling home. 
  • In the fourth inning, the Firebirds extended their lead when P.J. Moser hit a triple down the right-field line, allowing Tubbs to cross the plate. 
  • A sacrifice fly from Max Cairo added another run, making the score 3-0 in favor of Carthage. 
  • Despite Wheaton (Illinois) scoring a run in the ninth inning, Brendan Roberts secured the win with a groundout, completing the full game and ensuring victory for the Firebirds.
