Firebirds Come Up Short in Midweek Thriller

KENOSHA, Wis. - The Carthage women's lacrosse team hosted the UW-Eau Claire Blugolds on Wednesday evening at Art Keller Field. The two teams battled each other hard from the opening whistle to the final buzzer, and the Blugold took a late lead to come away with a win in the tight contest.

How it Happened

First Quarter:
The Blugolds struck first in the opening frame with a goal in the fifth minute of the game. August Claridge leveled the score with an unassisted goal, and an unassisted goal from Kyleigh Higgins would give the Firebirds a 2-1 lead. Three unanswered goals for Eau Claire would end the first quarter with a 4-2 advantage for the visiting squad.

Second Quarter:
The Firebirds offense came alive to open the second quarter, with Higgins scoring another unassisted goal, and Claridge tallying two more unanswered goals in the first three minutes of the period. The first Claridge goal was unassisted, while the second goal came off a Shannon Heitschmidt assist. The Firebirds were back in the lead 5-4. Back to back goals for the Blugolds would flip the score again, and Carthage quickly trailed 6-5 with 10 minutes to play in the half. Claridge earned another pair of unassisted goals, flipping the lead back to the Firebirds 7-6. Eau Claire found the back of the net twice more in the final four minutes of the quarter to head into the half with an 8-7 lead.

Third Quarter:
The third quarter belonged to the Firebirds offense. Claridge got the offensive rally started with a goal, Higgins earning the assist on the play. Bailey Koestel struck next, scoring a goal off a pass from Emma McDonald. Hannah Kim scored a man-up goal with 8:43 to play in the quarter, giving the Firebirds a 10-8 lead. Higgins scored another goal to give the Firebirds a three-goal lead heading into the fourth and final quarter.

Fourth Quarter:
Higgins opened the fourth with her fourth goal of the game to give the Firebirds their largest lead of the game at 12-8. The Blugolds proceeded to go on a 3-0 run to cut the deficit to 12-11 with nine minutes to play. Koestel found the back of the net for the second time with an assist from McDonald. Another 3-0 run for the Blugolds in under two minutes would flip the script and give Eau Claire a 14-13 lead with 4:36 to play. A goal from Higgins would level the score with 3:32 to go, but a Blugold goal just 45 seconds later would give Eau Claire back the lead and earn the victory.

  • Higgins finished with five goals and one assist.
  • Koestel earned two goals on four shots.
  • Alessandra Almendarez earned 17 saves on the night.
