Firebirds Drop Game One at Home to IWU

KENOSHA, Wis. - The Carthage Baseball team took on the Illinois Wesleyan Titans at home on Sunday afternoon. Through a hard-fought game, the Firebirds offense was not able to battle back to take the win. 

The Basics
  • Final score: Illinois Wesleyan 13 - Carthage 3
  • Location: Kenosha, Wisconsin - Augie Schmidt Field
  • Records: Illinois Wesleyan 21-9 (10-3 CCIW), Carthage 20-9 (8-5 CCIW)


How it Happened 
 
  • The Titans started out the game strong, scoring three runs in the top of the first. 
  • The Firebirds chipped away at the deficit with the first batter in the lineup, Max Cairo, cranking a ball over the rightfield fence for his second home run of the season. The score at the end of the first inning was 3-1, Titans.
  • The Firebirds turned an inning-ending double play to get out of the top of the third inning. 
  • P.J. Moser hit a ball to right center field to drive Cairo home. Matt Felber could not beat out the throw to be safe, but Kody Krekling took home easily to tie the score to the bottom of the third at three.  
  • The Firebirds, yet again, turned an inning-ending double play in the 4th inning. Carthage went scoreless for the fourth. 
  • The Titans put up one run in both the fifth and sixth.
  • Illinois Wesleyan scored three runs in the top of the eighth, making the score 8-3. Carthage's offense remained stagnant in the bottom half of the inning.
  • The Titans scored five runs in the top of the 9th inning. The Titans take the win, 13-3. 


High Flyers
  • Max Cairo went two-for-fourth, hitting his third homer of the season. 
  • Brendan Roberts fanned four batters through 6.0 innings of work.
