Firebirds Charge Past Elmhurst in Saturday's Doubleheader

ELMHURST, Ill.  — The Carthage College baseball team started the weekend with two wins over Elmhurst on Saturday, 7-5 and 16-3. 

The Basics
Game One
  • Final score: Carthage 7 - Elmhurst 5
  • Location: Elmhurst, Illinois - Butterfield Park 
  • Records: Carthage 16-7 (4-4 CCIW), Elmhurst 6-19 (2-7 CCIW) 

Game Two
  • Final score: Carthage 16 - Elmhurst 3
  • Location: Elmhurst, Illinois - Butterfield Park 
  • Records: Carthage 17-7 (5-4 CCIW), Elmhurst 6-20 (2-8 CCIW) 


How it Happened 
 
  • In the first game, Carthage responded to Elmhurst's early lead with an RBI double from AJ Gaca in the second inning, narrowing the margin to one run.
  • Despite Elmhurst adding two runs in the fifth inning, Carthage rallied with Gaca's double in the sixth, bringing Drew Knecht home to make it 4-2.
  • The momentum continued in the sixth as Jake Fulton's single brought in another run, followed by Kody Krekling's RBI double, tying the game at four.
  • Elmhurst regained the lead, scoring in the bottom of the inning to make it 5-4.
  • Carthage fought back, tying the game in the top of the ninth with an RBI double from P.J. Moser.
  • Matt Felber's two-RBI single in the same inning extended the Firebirds' lead to 7-5.
  • Jake Pappagallo secured the victory for Carthage in the bottom of the ninth inning, recording two strikeouts and a groundout.
  • Game two saw Max Cairo kick off with a lead-off homer.
  • Elmhurst countered with two runs in the bottom of the first inning.
  • Carthage responded in the fourth inning with a bases-loaded walk, scoring Gaca.
  • Cairo added a two-RBI single to center field in the fifth, narrowing the score to 4-3.
  • Carthage exploded in the seventh inning, adding five runs, including a two-RBI homer from Moser.
  • The Firebirds continued their offensive onslaught, scoring three runs in the eighth and four in the ninth, ultimately winning 16-3.



High Flyers
  • AJ Gaca, Drew Knecht, PJ Moser, and Kody Krekling all had a double in game one 
  • Bryce Schaum fanned 13 over 5.2 innings during game one. 
  • Max Cairo went four-for-six during game two with six runs batted in. 
  • Along with Cairo, Gaca, Knecht, and Zander Tubbs had a double. 
  • Ryan Scanlon struck out 13 over five innings of work during game two for his fourth win of the season.
