No. 10 Carthage College Men’s Volleyball Sweeps Illinois Wesleyan in Saturday Afternoon Action

KENOSHA, Wis. — Returning home, the No. 10 Carthage College men's volleyball team picked up a straight-set victory over Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon.

How it Happened
  • A kill from Drew Jansen started the Firebirds off sharp for the first set. 
  • Ryan Cholowinski and Owen Otto led the Firebirds on a 4-0 streak to bring Carthage up to 8-4. 
  • Carthage held onto their lead well into the first set, growing the score 16-10 after a kill from Otto. 
  • Illinois Wesleyan tried to gain a lead against the Firebirds, getting within three, but Carthage held the lead to win the set 25-20. 
  • Carthage threw forward an 8-1 run in the second to extend to a 17-7 score.
  • A block from Gene McNulty won the second set 25-12 for the Firebirds. 
  • Carthage came in hot for the third set, starting with a 4-0 run. 
  • Illinois Wesleyan and Carthage went point-for-point for most of the third set, never letting the Titans get within more than three. 
  • The Firebirds won the third set with a kill from Otto to seal the deal 25-18, winning the game 3-0 in sets. 

High Flyers
  • Owen Otto led the team with a match-best 11 kills on the day, followed by Drew Jansen with 10 and Ethan Sprague with eight.
  • For the fourth time this season, Gene McNulty recorded 30 or more assists, finishing with 35.
  • Sprague achieved a new career-high in total blocks, finishing with seven.
