Women's Lacrosse Suffers Loss to Ursinus

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Carthage women's lacrosse team traveled to Colorado to face off against the Ursinus College Bears on Thursday afternoon. After 60 minutes of play, and a brief lightning delay, the Firebirds fell to Ursinus 20-6.

How it Happened

The Bears opened the game with three unanswered goals in the opening quarter and jumped out to a 3-0 lead. The Firebirds climbed right back out of the deficit, starting with a goal scored by Kyleigh Higgns with 8:17 to play in the first quarter. Two and a half minutes later, Shannon Heitschmidt found Rosie Nolan for a goal to cut the Bears lead to one goal. August Claridge tied the game at 3-3 as she found the back of the net with 4:10 to play in the quarter. The Bears would score in the final two minutes and end the first with a 4-3 lead.

The second quarter belonged to the Bears, who shut out the Firebirds 6-0 in the period. The Bears led 10-3 at the end of the first half.

Ursinus opened the second half with five more unanswered goals, extending the lead to 15-3. Bailey Koestel ended the scoring drought when she scored an unassisted goal with six minutes to play in the third quarter. The Bears found the net again to bring the score to 16-4 with 2:20 to play in the third. Claridge answered right back with an advantage goal to make it a 16-5 game with one quarter to play.

The Bears opened the quarter by scoring a goal in the opening 45 seconds. Claridge earned the hat trick with her third goal of the game with 11:20 to play. The Bears would add three more goals to their total in the remainder of the quarter and came away with the win.
