Firebirds Surge Past Eagles in Saturday Showdown

Carthage 16, UW-La Crosse 13
KENOSHA, Wis. - The Carthage women's lacrosse team hosted the UW-La Crosse Eagles at Art Keller Field on Saturday afternoon. It was a tight battle from beginning to end, filled with momentum swings and lead change throughout the game. The Firebirds used a strong second half to come away with their sixth win of the season.

How it Happened

First Quarter:
  • The Eagles were the first to score in the competition, but Carthage quickly retaliated with a four goal run from Bailey Koestel, Piper LeFevre, August Claridge, and Shannon Heitschmidt. 
  • Following the 4-0 run from the Firebirds, UW Lacrosse found the back of the net on four goals, making the score 5-4 in favor of the Eagles at the end of the first quarter. 

Second Quarter:
  • The visitors had the first goal of the second quarter, but Kyleigh Higgins was quick to strike back with an unassisted goal. 
  • UW-La Crosse found the back of the net next. Soon after, Higgins responded with two more goals to earn the hat trick, tying the score at 7-7 heading into the second half.

Third Quarter:
  • To start off the second half, the visitors found the back of the net consecutively and pushed ahead of the Firebirds by two.
  • Koestel lessened the deficit with her second goal of the contest after a free position attempt.
  • Shortly after, Higgins scored her fourth goal of the game, tying up the score once again at 9-9. 
  • On a free position attempt, Hannah Kim scored her first goal of the contest, giving Carthage the lead for the first time since the opening quarter. 
  • Near the end of the third quarter, the Firebirds extended their advantage with a goal from Claridge, making the score at the end of the third quarter 11-9. 

Fourth Quarter:
  • The Firebirds continued their run going into the fourth quarter with a goal from LeFevre, assisted by Heitschmidt. 
  • The Eagles lessened the deficit with a goal, making the score 12-10 early on in the final quarter.
  • Soon after, Claridge scored her third goal of the contest, earning the second hat trick of the game along with Higgins.
  • The Eagles added another goal to bring the score to 12-10 with 9:14 to play, but the Firebirds went on a 3-0 run with goals coming from Kim, Higgins, and Claridge to give the Firebirds the largest lead of the day at 16-11.
  • The Eagles would add a pair of goals before the clock would hit zero and the Firebirds would claim the victory 16-13.

High Flyers
  • Higgins led the scoring for the Firebirds with five goals and eight shots on goal.
  • Claridge scored four goals and earned a hat trick for the fifth consecutive game.
  • Alessandra Almendarez registered a season-high 15 saves in her sixth victory of the year as the Firebirds goalie.
