Firebirds Swept in Saturday’s Doubleheader

KENOSHA, Wis.  — The Carthage College baseball team fell to Millikin in extra innings 4-3 and 12-0 on Saturday, wrapping up their three-game series with the Big Blue. 

The Basics
Game One
  • Final score: Millikin 4 - Carthage 3 (12 innings)
  • Location: Kenosha, Wisconsin - Augie Schmidt Field
  • Records: Millikin 11-10 (2-1 CCIW), Carthage 12-4 (1-1 CCIW)

How it Happened 
  • In the second inning of game one, Carthage Athletics seized the lead when Drew Knecht executed an RBI bunt single, allowing Zander Tubbs to cross home plate.
  • Continuing their offensive prowess, Knecht added to the lead in the third inning with an RBI single to right field, extending Carthage Athletics' advantage.
  • Despite Millikin scoring a solitary run in the fourth inning, a throwing error by the Big Blue in the fifth inning propelled Carthage Athletics to a 3-1 lead.
  • However, the visitors rallied in the sixth and seventh innings, knotting the score at three apiece.
  • It wasn't until the 12th inning that Millikin broke the deadlock, securing the lead with an RBI single.
  • With two strikeouts and a popup in the bottom of the 12th, Millikin clinched victory in the first game, prevailing 4-3.
 
  • In game two, in the fourth inning, Millikin broke the scoreless stalemate with an RBI single through the right side. 
  • A sacrifice fly in the sixth inning added another run for the Big Blue. 
  • Millikin then capitalized with three runs in the seventh and an additional nine in the eighth, significantly widening their lead to 14-0 and going on to win.
