Schaum Fans 11 as Firebirds Take First Game of Weekend Series

KENOSHA, Wis.  — The Carthage College baseball team picked up the first of three in their weekend series against Millikin on Friday, 3-1. 

The Basics
  • Final score: Carthage 3 - Millikin 1
  • Location: Kenosha, Wisconsin - Augie Schmidt Field
  • Records: Carthage 12-3 (1-0 CCIW), Millikin 10-10 (1-1 CCIW) 

How it Happened 
  • The game remained tied until the bottom of the sixth inning, when Joe Zuleger's RBI single to left-center brought P.J. Moser home, giving the Firebirds a 1-0 lead.
  • Millikin drew even in the eighth inning due to a throwing error. However, in the bottom half of the inning, a two-RBI double down the right-field line from Zuleger brought Moser and Kody Krekling home, putting Carthage ahead 3-1.
  • Jake Pappagallo stepped onto the mound in the ninth inning and efficiently closed the game, inducing a popup, groundout, and flyout, securing the 3-1 victory for the Firebirds.

High Flyers
  • Bryce Schaum struck out 11 batters over eight innings of work, only allowing one run and four walks. 
  • Schaum has a team-best 62 strikeouts this season; the right-handed hurler leads the conference. 
  • Jake Pappagallo picked up his first save of the season. 
  • In the batter's box, four Firebirds hit a double in the contest: Kody Krekling, Joe Zuleger, and AJ Gaca
