Almendarez Breaks All-Time Saves Record as Firebirds Fall to Lake Forest

KENOSHA, Wis. - The Carthage women's lacrosse team faced off against the Lake Forest Foresters on a cold and windy Tuesday evening at Art Keller Field. It was a tightly contested battle between the two squads for most of the game, before the Foresters found a way to pull ahead and earn the win over the Firebirds. Despite the loss, it was a special night for the Firebirds, as goalie Alessandra Almendarez earned her fifth save of the game in the first quarter to break the Carthage women's lacrosse career saves record with 469 saves during her time as a Firebird.




How it Happened

First Quarter:
The Foresters found the scoreboard first after just 2:34 of play to take a 1-0 lead. August Claridge leveled the score at 1-1 with an unassisted goal at the 10:43 mark. The score would remain tied for the rest of the opening frame.

Second Quarter:
Claridge once again found the back of the net with an unassisted goal at 13:13. The Foresters tied the game again after the Firebirds held the lead for 29 seconds. The Firebirds wasted no time taking the lead back, as Bailey Koestel found the back of the net with 11:38 to go in the quarter. Emma McDonald was credited with the assist. The Foresters found a way to level the score at 3-3 with 8:56 to play, but Shannon Heitschmidt answered right back with a goal less than 50 seconds later to give Carthage a 4-3 lead. Momentum would swing the way of the Foresters in the final four minutes of the half, as Lake Forest scored three unanswered goals to close out the second quarter with a 6-4 lead.

Third Quarter:
The Foresters struck first in the second half, extending their lead to three goals. Rosie Nolan answered back quickly to bring the Firebirds back within two. Kyleigh Higgins earned the assist on the play. The Foresters would go on to score one more goal in the fourth quarter and the Firebirds entered the fourth quarter trailing 8-5.

Fourth Quarter:
The Foresters wasted no time extending the lead in the fourth, scoring their ninth goal of the game after 21 seconds came off the clock in the quarter. Piper LeFevre scored a goal just 40 seconds later to cut the deficit back to three goals. Another Foresters goal made the score 10-6 with 10:50 to play in the game. Claridge found the back of the net to earn the hat trick with 7:35 to play and bring the Firebirds back within three. LAke Forest found the net again to regain a four-goal lead. Higgins scored her first goal of the game with 4:22 to play. The Firebirds offense could not muster up the momentum to climb back, as they would fall to the Foresters at the conclusion of regulation.

High Flyers
  • Claridge scored three goals, earning a hat trick for the fourth consecutive game and the seventh in eight games
  • Higgins scored one goal and earned a pair of assists for a total of three points on her stat line
  • Almendarez made nine saves on her way to a school record with 473 career saves
