Carthage Firebirds Conclude Spring Break Expedition with 5-2 Victory Over Macalester; Secure Six Wins in Arizona

TUSCON, Ariz.  — The Carthage College baseball team concluded their Arizona excursion with a 5-2 victory over Macalester on Monday. The Firebirds secured victories in six out of seven games throughout their spring break trip.

How it Happened 
 
  • After Howard Payne notched an early run in the opening inning, Carthage swiftly responded by scoring two runs, thanks to Collin Callahan's two-RBI single. 
  • Following a lone run in the fourth, Carthage exploded with a nine-run surge in the fifth, establishing a 12-1 lead.
  • In the sixth inning, Chuckie Smith sealed the victory with a solo homer, concluding the game with a final score of 13-1.
 
  • Against Claremont Mudd Scripps, Carthage tallied four runs in the second. 
  • Despite Claremont Mudd Scripps scoring one run in the fourth, Smith's well-placed sac fly allowed Zander Tubbs to score. 
  • The Stags furthered their lead with runs in the fifth and sixth innings, securing an 8-5 advantage. 
  • Additional lone runs from Claremont Mudd Scripps in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings resulted in an 11-5 final score. 
  • Despite Kody Krekling's solo homer narrowing the margin to 11-6, the Stags emerged victorious.
 
  • In Carthage's final game in Arizona, Max Cairo's single to right field paved the way for Callahan to cross home plate. 
  • A wild pitch in the second inning allowed Tubbs to score, and an RBI single from AJ Gaca extended the lead to 3-0 in the fourth. 
  • Tubbs and Gaca each contributed solo homers in the sixth, expanding the lead to 5-2. 
  • Despite Macalester plating two runs in the seventh, Carthage pitcher James Lindmouth secured the victory, closing the door on any potential comeback.


High Flyers
  • Bryce Schaum earned his second win of the season after pitching seven innings of work, only allowing one run and striking out 14 against Howard Payne. 
  • Five Firebirds had two hits against Howard Payne: Collin Callahan, Kody Krekling, Drew Knecht, and Jake Fulton
  • Chuckie Smith and Krekling each tallied their first home runs of the season, while AJ Gaca belted two against Howard Payne and Macalester. 
  • Zander Tubbs registered his first triple of the season and his first homer against Macalester. 
  • Jake Pappagallo struck out nine batters over 6.2 innings of work against Macalester.
