No. 12 Men’s Volleyball Rolls Raiders in Four

KENOSHA, Wis. — The No. 12 Carthage College men's volleyball squad picked up another 3-1 victory on Thursday, defeating MSOE.

The Basics
  • Final score: Carthage 3 - MSOE 1
  • Location: Kenosha, Wisconsin - Tarble Arena
  • Records: No. 12 Carthage 7-4, MSOE 3-3
How it Happened
  • A Kill from Gene McNulty started the Firebirds off, bringing them up 5-2.
  • The Firebirds went on an 8-4 run with a service ace from Gene McNulty to hold an 18-10 margin.
  • A block from Ben Heise and Keegan Brumitt extended the Firebirds' lead 22-13. 
  • Brumitt came in with a kill to end the set 25-15.
  • Carthage started the second set with a five-point run; however, MSOE pressed to get ahead of Carthage.
  • The Firebird offense was exemplary, and they never suppressed past a five-point deficit. Carthage took the second set 25-15.
  • A kill from Ryan Cholewinski started the Firebirds off for the third set.
  • MSOE extended a lead quickly, leaving the Firebirds trailing by four. 
  • Carthage retaliated and put together a 7-0 run, moving in front 14-12. 
  • The Raiders retaliated with a 4-0 run to gain the lead again, but Carthage tied it 18 with a block from Grant Veldman and Ethan Sprague
  • After battling nearly point-for-point, Carthage fell to MSOE 25-21. 
  • Carthage came in with a 3-0 run to start. 
  • A kill from Owen Otto helped the Firebirds gain an advantage, putting them ahead 15-11
  • The Raiders managed to tie the score to 17, but the Firebirds fought back with a 6-0 run, pushing ahead to 23-17. 
  • MSOE fought their way back to a one-point deficit, but a kill from Brumitt took the fourth set 25-23, winning the match. 

High Flyers
  • Keegan Brumitt led the Firebirds with a match-best 11 kills, followed by Owen Otto with nine. 
  • Ben Heise totaled seven combined blocks, followed by Brumitt and Ryan Cholewinski with five. 
  • Setters Gene McNulty and Ryan Morey added double-digit assists with 20 and 10, respectively. 
  • McNulty added 12 digs, while Zach Noland and Otto had 10.
  • The Firebird offense hit .375 in set two (10 kills, one error, 24 total attacks).

  • Carthage will be back on the court on Friday, February 23 to start conference play at 7 p.m. against Loras.
