Carthage Women's Wrestling Competes in North Central Invite

NAPERVILLE — The Carthage College women's wrestling team traveled to North Central College on Sunday to compete in the 2024 North Central Invite. The Firebirds earned a 23rd place finish as a team and were led by a sixth place finish for Adele Senzig.

Team Results

The Firebirds finished in 23rd place as a team with 31.0 points. North Central won the tournament with 251.0 points, while Iowa placed second with 148.5 points. McKendree placed third with 148.0 points, while King took fourth with 97.0 points. Lindenwood rounded out the top five with 93.5 points.

How it Happened

Karina Torres opened the tournament with a win by a 14-9 decision over Megan Valdez (Lindenwood). Torres then dropped a second round match against Odelia Lopez (Schreiner) with a 12-0 tech fall. Torres moved into the consolation bracket, where the sophomore earned a 14-4 tech fall win over teammate Kirsten Cortez. Torres then won by fall over Callie Helton (Baldwin Wallace) (0:47). The day ended for Torres after a 10-0 tech fall loss to Zoe Omura (Midland). Torres scored 5.5 points for the Firebirds.

Cortez started the day with a late fall defeat at the hands of Nayeli Flores Rogue (Eastern Oregon) (5:15). Cortez opened the consolation bracket with a win by tech fall over Gabriela Hotaj (TF 10-0), before falling in the previously mentioned match against Torres. Cortez scored two points for the Firebirds.

Natalie Majer defeated Angela Lee (Quincy) with a 10 tech fall in the opening round. Majer fell out of the championship bracket after a second round 10-0 tech fall loss to Caitlyn Jackson (Lindenwood). Entering the consolation bracket, Majer defeated Alexandra Tchekounova (Quincy) with a 12-2 tech fall. Majer ended the tournament after a fall defeat to Tatiana Walker (Sacred Heart) (0:28). Majer scored 4.5 points for the Carthage team score.

Alaina Hollendoner opened the tournament with a bye before falling to Bella Bolek (North Central) by way of a 10-0 tech fall. Hollendoner received another bye before earning an 8-0 decision over Madison Stirrett (Rochester). Hollendoner then dropped a 8-0 decision to Sophia Renteria (Adrian). Hollendoner earned one point for the team score.

Madison Cook received a bye to start the day before falling to Gracie Guarino (North Central) with a fall 2:05 into the match. Cook then lost by way of a fall to Bella Serrano at the 3:34 mark.

Taya Stanford received a bye in the opening round before falling by way of a 10-0 tech fall to Estella Gutches (McKendree). Stanford bounced back with a pair of victories in the consolation bracket. The first was a 10-2 decision over Hattie Baldwin (Chadron State) and the second victory was a fall against Riley Weiler (Iowa Lakes CC) (2:02). Stanford's day came to an end after being defeated by way of a fall in the fourth round of the consolation bracket against Jasmine Hopkins (Quincy) (2:25). Stanford scored three points in the tournament.

Amelia Howell fell in the opening round to Deila Guzlow (Eastern Oregon) (TF 10-0). Howell then received a bye and won by injury default in the next two rounds, before falling by way of a fall at the 1:13 mark to Hopkins (Quincy) in the consolation third round. Howell scored three team points.


Jennifer Villagomez opened the tournament with a 10-0 tech fall loss to Guzlow (Eastern Oregon). Villagomez then entered the consolation bracket with a bye before earning a victory with a fall in at the 0:45 mark over MaKayla Gowell (Alma). Villagomez then lost to Callie Alfieri (North Central) with a 10-0 tech fall. Villagomez earned three points for the Firebirds team score.

Adele Senzig won by decision over Alimatu Toheeb-Lawal with a score of 13-8. Senzig then defeated Maria Potrero (Grand Valley State) with a fall at the 1:14 mark to advance to the quarterfinals. Senzig was eliminated from the championship bracket after falling to Caylynn Chandler (North Central) (0:20). In the consolation bracket, Senzig bounced back with a win over Ariana Gonzalez with a fall at 4:58. Senzig then dropped a 2-0 decision to Sabrina Sifuentez (Southern Oregon) and moved to the fifth place match, where the graduate student lost by fall to Jazmine Garcia (Quincy) (4:45) to finish in sixth place and earn 6.5 points for the Carthage score.

Izzee Nelson-Carillo received a bye before defeating Yareli Ortega (Elmhurst) by way of a fall in the second round (1:25). In the quarterfinal, Nelson-Carillo was defeated by Abbey Boersma (Wis-Stevens Point) (Fall 1:51). Nelson-Carillo's day ended with a fall against Jayla Jones (Quincy) in 1:10. Nelson-Carillo scored four points for Carthage.

Makenna Bovee opened with a loss to Paris Willis (Baldwin Wallace) in the first round of prelims (Fall 3:00). Bovee bounced back with a win, earning a fall over Keyahna Phillips (Iowa Lakes CC) (1:29). Bovee ended with a loss to Mickaela Keane (Northern Michigan) in the consolation bracket (TF 12-0). Bovee scored 2.5 points for the Firebirds.

Team Results

The Firebirds (0-2) will return to action on December 30 as the team heads to Evanston, Ill. to compete in the Midlands Tournament, hosted by Northwestern. Carthage women's wrestling returns to Tarble Arena on January 16 as the Firebirds host Aurora at 6 p.m. For more information, visit athletics.carthage.edu.
