Career High Performances for Green and Thistle Propel Firebirds Past Raiders

Carthage 70, MSOE 52
KENOSHA - The Carthage women's basketball team returned to Tarble Arena on Saturday to host the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) Raiders. While the Raiders kept the score close in the first half, a strong third quarter propelled the Firebirds to their fifth straight victory.

How it Happened

Emma Thistle got things started with an and-one layup to open the game and made the free throw to complete the three-point play. A three-point basket from Marianna Morrissey extended the Firebirds lead to 6-3 in the opening minute. Another layup from Morrissey and a three from Malia Green extended the lead to 11-3 with seven minutes to go in the quarter. A 6-0 run for the Raiders cut the deficit to 11-9 before Elena Knebel ended the run with another three pointer for the Firebirds. Another 6-0 run for the Raiders gave the visiting squad their first lead of the day with the score at 15-14 with 1:26 to play in the opening quarter. Grace Cord scored on a last-second layup to give the Firebirds a 16-15 lead to end the quarter. Morrissey led the way with five points in the opening period.

Green opened the quarter with a layup to build the Carthage lead to 18-15. The two teams traded the lead back and forth for the next two minutes, before a three from Morrissey extended the lead to 26-21 with 5:15 to play in the half. Another three from Green extended the lead further, but an 8-2 run for the Raiders would tie the game at 31-31 heading into the half. Green led the Firebirds with six points in the second quarter and nine in the first half.

Emma Carlson gave the Firebirds the lead with a layup on the opening play of the third quarter, which sparked a 16-0 run for the Firebirds over the first 5:36 of the second half. The offensive run featured baskets from Carlson, Morrissey, Green, and Alyssa Orozco. The two squads traded baskets through the remainder of the quarter and the Firebirds entered the fourth quarter with a 54-42 lead. Carlson and Morrissey each scored six points in the quarter as the Firebirds outscored the Raiders 23-11 in the period.

Green once again opened the quarter with a layup to extend the Firebirds lead to 56-42. A 6-0 run extended the Firebirds lead to 18 points with 6:48 to play in the game. The Firebirds lead would get as high as 20 points on a field goal from Nora Ahram, and the Firebirds came away with another convincing win at home.
