Firebirds Stumble in CCIW Opener Against Carroll

Carroll 62, Carthage 57
KENOSHA - The Carthage women's basketball team opened CCIW play on Wednesday night as the Firebirds hosted the Carroll (Wis.) Pioneers in Tarble Arena. After a strong opening quarter, the Firebirds struggled to take care of the basketball and a high number of turnovers would allow the Pioneers to come away with the win.

How it Happened

The Firebirds jumped ahead on the opening possession with a layup from Malia Green. The two teams traded baskets for the first half of the quarter, with the Pioneers leading 11-10 with 4:26 to play. A layup from Emma Carlson gave Carthage the lead and started a scoring run for the Firebirds. A layup from Marianna Morrissey extended the lead to three points, before a layup from Alyssa Orozco pushed the lead to 16-11. A layup from Grace Cord would give the Firebirds an 18-11 lead at the end of the opening quarter. Morrissey led the way with eight points in the quarter.

A layup from Emma Thistle extended the scoring run to 10-0 over the previous five minutes of play going back to the first quarter. A three from Carroll's Emilie Wizner ended the drought and cut the Firebird lead to 20-14. Back-to-back scores from Carlson and Morrissey extended the Firebirds lead to double digits at 24-14, and another layup from Carlson pushed the lead to 12 points. The Pioneers began to heat up offensively, going on a 12-4 run and cutting the deficit to two as the Firebirds led 28-26 with 1:14 to go in the half. A four point run for Carlson would bring the Firebirds back to a six point lead at the half with the score at 32-26 in favor of Carthage. Carlson finished with 10 points in the quarter.

Morrissey and Carlson each scored to open the second half as the Firebirds continued to hold on to a slim lead. Elena Knebel extended the lead with her first points of the contest, but a 4-0 Pioneers run would cut the lead back to three points with 3:37 to play in the quarter. The two teams traded baskets the rest of the way to the end of the quarter, with Carthage holding on to a 42-40 lead heading into the final quarter.

The Pioneers scored on their opening possession, tying the game at 42-42. Jessie Pakaski hit a jump shot to put Carthage back on top, but Carroll responded with a basket of their own. Thistle drained a deep three to put the Firebirds up by three with 7:29 to play in regulation. Back-to-back unanswered baskets gave the Pioneers their first lead since the first quarter with the score moving to 48-47. A three-pointer from Morrissey put the Firebirds back up 50-48 with 6:33 on the clock. The Pioneers tied the game at 50-50 before heading into the final media timeout of the game. Coming out of the timeout, a basket for the Pioneers, followed by a pair of costly Carthage turnovers allowed Carroll to jump out to a 56-50 lead with 2:30 to play. Carthage began to foul to stop the clock and Carroll went on to claim the win 62-57.
