Firebirds Claim Victory in Overtime Thriller

Carthage 69, St. Norbert 68 (Overtime)
DE PERE - The Carthage women's basketball team traveled north on Wednesday evening to take on the St. Norbert Green Knights. It was a back-and-forth game the entire way with a late score forcing overtime. The Firebirds battled the whole way and came away with the team's third consecutive win.

How it Happened

The Green Knights opened the game on a 5-0 run, before Malia Green scored a layup to get the Firebirds on the scoreboard. Back-to-back baskets from Marianna Morrissey gave the Firebirds their first lead of the night at 6-5 with 6:11 to play in the opening quarter. The two teams traded baskets for the rest of the quarter before Alyssa Orozco hit a three-pointer to give Carthage at 15-12 lead to end the quarter. Morrissey led the team in scoring with six points in the period.

Morrissey opened the quarter with a three-point basket to extend the Carthage lead to 18-12. Back-to-back scores from Grace Cord and Emma Thistle extended the lead to 10 points at 22-12. The Green Knights offense found its groove in the back half of the quarter, going on a 16-4 run to end the half and St. Norbert took a 28-26 lead into the locker room.

The Firebirds offense took complete control to open the second half. A three from Thistle kickstarted a 13-0 run to start the third quarter. The Green Knights scored for the first time in the half with 3:45 to play, closing the deficit to 39-30. St. Nortbert closed the quarter on a 9-3 run and the Firebirds held a 42-37 lead heading into the final 10 minutes of the game.

A 6-2 run quickly closed the gap for the Green Knights, who trailed 44-43 with 8:18 to play in the game. A deep three from Elena Knebel extended the lead to 47-43 with 7:44 to play. Two consecutive scores for St. Norbert tied the game at 47-47. A driving layup put the Green Knights up 49-47 for the team's first lead since coming out of the halftime break. The two teams traded points until 2:45 to play, when a three from Thistle put the Firebirds back on top 52-51. Free throws from Emma Carlson extended the Firebirds lead to three points, until a three from St. Norbert's Kalina Winslow tied the game at 54-54 with 1:16 to play. The game-tying shot did not falter the Firebirds offense, as Green hit a three of her own to jump back up 57-54. The Firebirds were seconds away from sealing the win until Casey Jepson hit a three-pointer with three seconds left to tie the game at 58-58 and force overtime.

Overtime started with a pair of threes for the Green Knights which was matched by a combined six points from Morrissey, Carlson, and Green to keep the game tied at 64-64. A spin move and a layup from Orozco drew a foul to turn into a three-point play and gave the Firebirds a 68-66 lead with 1:41 to play. The Green Knights tied the game once again with a layup with 31 seconds left in overtime, causing Carthage to take a timeout with 14 seconds left in the game and 13 seconds left on the shot clock. Carlson attempted a layup which went off the front of the rim, and came down into the hands of Thistle who was fouled hard with one second left. Thistle missed her first free throw attempt but drained the second. The Green Knights called timeout to move the ball up for a last second shot attempt, but a missed layup would seal the deal and give Carthage the win.

High Flyers

  • Morrissey led the way with 16 points, 6 rebounds, 5 steals, and 4 assists.
  • Thistle scored 12 points, along with a team high 7 rebounds and 4 assists.
  • Orozco finished with 12 points and 3 rebounds.
  • Carlson ended with 10 points and 5 rebounds.

Coach's Remarks

"Wow!" said Head Coach Megan Jones. "We got it done when it mattered. St. Norbert is a great team and they made some big shots to force overtime and continued to make shots in OT. We could have folded but we kept fighting and got stops when we needed them. It was a great team win and everyone contributed. It's still early in the season and we have a lot to work on, but I'm very proud of the fight we showed tonight."
