Fast Start Lifts Firebirds Past Benedictine

Carthage 54, Benedictine 42
LISLE - The Carthage women's basketball team hit the road on Saturday to face off against the Benedictine Eagles. It was a low-scoring defensive battle, but a strong first quarter gave the Firebirds an early advantage that would carry the team to victory.

How it Happened

After the Eagles opened the scoring with a first possession basket, the Firebirds went on a 12-0 run in the opening quarter. Marianna Morrissey kicked off the run with 7:38 to play in the quarter, and was joined in scoring by Emma Carlson, Taelor Paulsen, and Grace Cord. The Eagles ended the run with a jump shot from Makenzie Carroll in the final 30 seconds of the quarter, leaving the Firebirds with an eight-point lead to end the period. Carlson and Morrissey each had four points in the quarter.

Morrissey kept the scoring going early in the second quarter with a layup and a pair of free throws. The Eagles went stride for stride with the Firebirds in the second quarter, with Carthage outscoring their opponent 12-10 in the period to enter the halftime break with a 24-14 lead. Morrissey finished with six points in the quarter and a team leading 10 at the half.

Both teams came out the half with struggling offenses, as the Eagles were the first to find the bottom of the net nearly three full minutes into the third quarter. A three from Paulsen extended the Firebirds lead back to 11 points, but a pair of free throws and a layup quickly brought the Eagles back within seven points of the lead. A three pointer from Emma Thistle with 5:29 to play in the quarter ended the Eagles scoring run and brought the lead to 30-20. The Firebirds lead grew to 13 after a trio of free throws from Carlson, but an Eagles free throw cut the lead to 37-25 to end the quarter. Morrissey's four points once again led the Firebirds in scoring for the period.

Morrissey used a layup to extend the lead to 14 to open the fourth quarter, and four points from Cord kept the lead at that amount for the next four minutes. The two teams traded baskets the rest of the way, as the Firebirds came away with a 54-42 victory.

High Flyers

  • Morrissey led the team with 19 points (8-20 from the field), seven rebounds, three steals, and two assists.
  • Cord finished with 11 points, seven rebounds and a block.

Coach's Remarks

"It wasn't always pretty today but we stayed resilient and fought through it," said Head Coach Megan Jones. "Benedictine went on a couple runs and we did a good job sustaining those to stay in control. We will get refocused next week to prepare for St. Norbert."
