Firebirds Defense Shines in Home Opener

The Carthage Women's Basketball Team held their 2024-25 home opener against the Lawrence Vikings on Wednesday night in Tarble Arena. It was a strong opening night at home for the Firebirds, as the team put on a defensive clinic and came away with the victory over the Vikings.

How it Happened

1st Quarter: 
  • The Firebirds won the tip off, and immediately transitioned the ball into a made jump shot from senior Elena Knebel to put themselves on the board. 
  • Carthage went on a 9-1 run, which was capped off by a three from Emma Thistle.
  • The Vikings retaliated with a 12 point run to bring them ahead of Carthage 13-9. 
  • The two teams battled back and forth to gain the upper hand, but Lawrence held Carthage by just one point, ending the first quarter at 15-14. 

2nd Quarter: 
  • After a pair of free throws extended the Vikings lead, Malia Green leveled the score with a three pointer to even the game at 17-17. 
  • A seven point run with two back-to-back shots by Marianna Morrissey and Thistle gave the Firebirds a 24-19 lead. 
  • A three-pointer from freshman Alyssa Orozco extended the Firebirds lead 27-21. 
  • In the final three minutes of the half, the Firebirds went on an 8-4 run, fueled by four points from Grace Cord.

3rd Quarter: 
  • Lawrence came into the second half fighting to gain a lead but after a 10-5 run for the Firebirds, Carthage held the lead at 44-30. 
  • The Firebirds continued to extend their lead with a three pointer from Nora Ahram and four free throws from Giana Rawlings and Morrissey to bring the score to 52-34. 
  • Carthage continued to control the momentum with a 12-6 run, ending the third quarter 56-38. 

4th Quarter: 
  • A deep three point shot from Rawlings sparked a 15-6 run in the fourth quarter with shots by Taelor Paulsen, Whitney Thompson, Emma Carlson, Orozco, and Morrissey. 
  • The Firebirds ended the game leading 71-44. 

High Flyers
  • Morissey led the team in points with 14, followed by Carlson with 11. 
  • Carlson also led in rebounds for the team with 11. 
  • Green, Elsmore, and Ahram all led in assists with four.
