Men's Volleyball Experiences First Season Defeat Against Cal Lutheran in California

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — In their debut competition in California, the No. 8 Carthage men's volleyball team faced their first setback of the season, falling 3-1 to No. 6 Cal Lutheran.

How it Happened
  • Carthage took a 10-6 lead in the opening set, sparked by a kill from Jack McDonald
  • Despite a tie at 14, the Firebirds regained control with a crucial kill from Ben Heise. However, a 7-1 run by the Kingsmen flipped the score to 21-16. 
  • Despite efforts from Ryan Cholewinski and Heise with a combined block, the Firebirds fell short, and Cal Lutheran claimed the set 25-22.
  • The second set saw Owen Otto leveling the score early at seven with a well-timed kill. 
  • Nevertheless, Cal Lutheran dominated with a 10-2 run, widening the gap to eight.
  • Mitch Geiger's kill brought the Firebirds within five, but Cal Lutheran secured the set 25-18. 
  • Moving to the third set, both teams exchanged points until Carthage surged ahead 14-11 with a kill from Gene McNulty and a Kingsmen attack error. 
  • Owen Hendricks' kill extended the Firebirds' lead to 18-13, and Heise's ace further solidified their advantage. 
  • Despite a late push from the Kingsmen, a service error awarded Carthage the set 25-23.
  • In the fourth set, Carthage initially led 6-4, courtesy of a kill and ace from Geiger.
  • Later in the set, Cal Lutheran orchestrated an 8-2 run, establishing a 19-13 lead and ultimately securing the match with a 25-17 victory.
