No. 8 Carthage College Men's Volleyball Team Falls 3-2 to No. 10 NYU in California Clash

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — On Saturday afternoon, the eighth-ranked Carthage College men's volleyball team suffered a 3-2 defeat against the tenth-ranked NYU in the second match held in California.

How it Happened
  • In the opening set, NYU secured a 10-7 lead, including an ace. 
  • Subsequently, the Violets extended their advantage to 14-8. 
  • Despite a commendable effort with a kill and block from Ben Heise narrowing the gap to 23-18, NYU claimed the first set with a score of 25-19. 
  • This momentum carried into the second set, where NYU surged ahead 11-4, ultimately winning the set 25-16.
  • Moving on to the third set, kills from Ryan Cholewinski, Heise, and Gene McNulty, along with a ball-handling error, propelled Carthage to a five-point lead.
  • Owen Otto's ace further increased the Firebirds' advantage by six. 
  • Although NYU reduced the deficit to three points, Heise's decisive kill secured a 25-21 set victory for Carthage.
  • In the fourth set, after NYU took a 13-8 lead, Carthage responded with a six-point streak, seizing a one-point lead. 
  • Later in the set, Drew Jansen's kill extended Carthage's lead to 21-19. 
  • Despite NYU's late push, an Owen Otto kill clinched the set for the Firebirds.
  • Carthage dominated the beginning of the fifth set, scoring the first five points, highlighted by a kill from Heise and a solo block from Cholewinski. 
  • A kill from Otto further increased the Firebirds' lead, but NYU mounted a comeback, reaching match point at 15-14. 
  • Two quick kills from McNulty and Heise turned the tide, giving Carthage a 16-15 advantage. 
  • Cholewinski and Otto's combined block leveled the score at 17, but NYU secured the final two points to win the match 19-17.
