NAPERVILLE, Ill. – The Carthage women's tennis team opened conference play on Friday as they took on North Central (Ill.). The Firebirds battled hard, but ultimately came up short in the CCIW opener, falling to the Cardinals.

In the doubles matches,
Xingchen Liu and
Marie Weiss fell to their opponents 8-0.
Luana da Silva and
Giovanna Mendes came up short in their match, falling 8-3. Carthage third pairing,
Beatriz Ferreira and
Victoria Rizzo, lost 8-0 in their match as the Cardinals claimed all three points from doubles matches.
In singles matches, Liu fell to Abigail Penados 7-5 6-3. Weiss fell to Natalie Bassett 6-2 6-1. Mendes came up short against Kensington Payne, who took the match 6-3 6-1. Da Silva was defeated 6-0 6-0 by Mikayla Edquibon. Maddy Kearney fell to Nina Patience 6-1 6-2, while Rizzo fell to Kate Herlihy 6-2 6-1.
The Firebirds return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 12 as they host the Carroll Pioneers at Smeds Tennis Center. Action is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. For more information, visit
