Carthage Baseball Swept in Doubleheader Action Against North Central

KENOSHA, Wis. — On Saturday, the Carthage College baseball team dropped a doubleheader to North Central (Ill.) 11-4 in game one and 11-7 in game two. 

The Basics
Game One
  • Final score: North Central (Ill.) 11 - Carthage 4 
  • Location: Kenosha, Wisconsin - Augie Schmidt Field
  • Records: North Central (Ill.) 22-10 (8-5 CCIW), Carthage 8-23 (3-13 CCIW)

Game Two
  • Final score: North Central (Ill.) 11 - Carthage 7
  • Location: Kenosha, Wisconsin - Augie Schmidt Field
  • Records: North Central (Ill.) 23-10 (9-5 CCIW), Carthage 8-24 (3-14 CCIW)

How it Happened
  • To start game one, a double to left center from Cody Tostrud scored Oren Hill in the second. 
  • In the next at-bat, Kody Krekling scored Tostrud with an RBI single, doubling the lead to 2-0. 
  • Another RBI double from Cody Callahan made it 3-0. 
  • North Central (Ill.) used a four-run third to flip the score to 4-3. 
  • The Cardinals used a four-run fifth to extend the advantage to five. 
  • A two-RBI seventh made it 10-3, and an RBI single moved it to 11-3. 
  • Though Collin Callahan had an RBI single in the ninth, North Central (Ill.) won 11-4. 
 
  • Game two saw Carthage get the first run on the board in the first with a sac fly from Joe Zuleger. 
  • Two homers for the Cardinals in the fourth flipped the score to 2-1. 
  • North Central (Ill.) added two runs in the sixth, going ahead 4-1. 
  • The Firebirds responded with three runs in the bottom of the sixth, sparked by a sac fly out from Chuckie Smith scored Mike Ciesla. 
  • Three runs for the Cardinals in the seventh widened the gap to five. 
  • Although a solo homer from Tostrud in the eighth made it 10-7, the Cardinals won 11-7.


High Flyers
  • Collin Callahan went 3-for-5 with a double, while Cody Tostrud had a double going 2-for-4 in game one. 
  • Oren Hill and Callahan swiped a base in the game. 
  • On the mound, Bryce Schaum struck out eight batters through 4.1 innings of work during game one. 
  • P.J. Moser and Tostrud hit home runs in game two, while Callahan and Joe Zuleger had a double. 
  • Nick Hamilton struck out eight batters through 5.2 innings pitched. 


Team Results
 
  • The Firebirds return to the diamond tomorrow, facing Carroll (Wis.) at home starting at 1 p.m.
