WHEATON, Ill. - Competing in Wheaton for the second-consecutive week, the Carthage Firebirds women's track & field team took first overall out of ten teams after taking third last week. Five different Firebirds took first in their respective events, while junior
Aubrey Schoeneman took first in both the shot put and discus throw - continuing her torrent pace through the spring schedule.
Perfectly encapsulating the team's continual week-to-week improvement, a remarkable 32 student-athletes recorded lifetime or season best marks on Saturday evening to help propel Carthage to the top spot in the competition's standings. One such lifetime personal best came from senior
Katelyn Smith, who took first in the 5,000-meter run (17:51.56) and moved up to number two on the program's all-time list in the event.
- Carthage - 189
- Wheaton (Ill.) - 182
- Albion - 74
- Aurora - 64
- North Central (Ill.) - 63
"I was really proud of how the team stepped up and competed today. We were faced with a lot of different weather changes in the day, but they made the most out of the day and did amazing. As a team we had 32 lifetime or season bests from all event groups! Many of these marks moved us up in the CCIW rankings," proudly noted Carthage Firebirds head women's track & field coach
Stephanie Domin.
"
Katelyn Smith had a lifetime PR in the 5,000-meter run and won the race in 17:51.56. This moves her to the number two spot on the Carthage all-time list and she's knocking on the school-record door!"
- Looking to carry its momentum from a first-place finish in Wheaton, the Firebirds will head to UW-Whitewater for the Warhawks' Drake Alternative. The meet will take place on Friday, April 28.
