Carthage Bowling Participates in USBC Team Sectionals For First Time in Program History

ADDISON, Ill. - The 2022-2023 Carthage Firebirds women's bowling team made program history this weekend, competing in the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) Intercollegiate Team Sectionals for the first time ever. The Firebirds earned a top-ten finish among 17 teams in Addison but fell short of qualifying for the USBC Intercollegiate Team Championships. 


The Basics
 
  • Result: Ninth place out of 17 teams. 
  • Location: Stardust Bowl - Addison, Ill. 

How it Happened

  
Day One:
  • Day one of competition was centered around individual-based qualification for the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) Intercollegiate Singles Championships, as 216 bowlers in Addison (one of four sectional locations) participated in six games. The top eight bowlers in total pinfall earned qualification for the championships. Carthage's top performer on the day was Ashley Turner, who finished in 53rd (1,093 pins). 
Day Two: 
  • Carthage participated in 32 games on day two, holding firm in sixth place out of 17 teams in the sectional. The Firebirds erased 5,981 pins on day two, sitting roughly 200 pins short of the top four. The top four teams following all 64 games would go on to earn qualification to the USBC Intercollegiate Team Championships. 
Day Three:
  • The Firebirds were overtaken by a trio of teams on the third and final day of bowling at Stardust Bowl, as Saint Xavier, Judson, and Lourdes all jumped Carthage. Carthage ultimately finished in ninth, generating a total team pinfall of 11,616 across 64 games in two days. Despite not qualifying for the USBC Championships, this Firebirds' team broke a program barrier, becoming the first team in the program's young history to qualify for the sectional tournament.

High Flyers
 
  • Ashley Turner was Carthage's top performer on day one (individual qualifying), finishing 53rd out of 216 bowlers. The veteran knocked down 1,093 pins in six games. 
  • Caitlin Powers was second among all Firebirds in regards to total pinfall on day one, wiping out 1,044 pins en route to a top-100 finish (92nd).
